Chantilly Woodworking Show

Just a reminder that this coming weekend is the Woodworking Show at the Dulles Expo Center in Chantilly, VA. I'll be attending and will give you a report and maybe some picture.

Karl Bogott (editor)

From the President

Welcome to March Madness!
Speaking of madness, repairing/renewing/refinishing furniture can be a special kind of madness.  However, in Jeff Jewitt's book, Refinishing Furniture Made Simple, he offers a process for efficiently bringing a piece of furniture back to life.  Here's a very short summary:
  • Inspect - take a very close look at the piece from top to bottom, inside to out.  Determine how it was built and with what woods/veneers.  Also determine what repairs and modifications were made.  Determine the type of finish used (i.e. alcohol based - shellac/lacquer or oil based)
  • Clean first with mineral spirits, then soap solution (one oz. of Dawn detergent for 16 oz. of water).
  • Rinse with fresh water.
  • Renew the finish, or strip/refinish
Understand that missing finish, black or gray stains (which indicate damage to the wood underneath), large scratches/gouges, sticky finishes, alligatored finishes, or brittle/peeling/cloudy finishes will require that the piece be stripped and then refinished.

SAPFM Meeting.  You're invited to attend the spring Society of Period Furniture Makers meeting; Saturday, April 14th; Woodcraft store.  This meeting will be packed with great presentations/information.  Here's the agenda:
  •  9:15 — Ben Hobbs - Period Hardware and Fasteners.  Includes what to do if you don’t have access to real period hardware for your project.
  • 10:30 — Ray Journigan - Carving a Tidewater rococo mantelpiece (Part One); selection criteria/scaling/ creating templates
  • 11:30 — Steve Dietrich — The Ferry Farm Story-Steve’s furniture pieces.  (Also, Ben will comment on his pieces.)
  • 1:00 — Ray Journigan —Mantelpiece (Part Two); layout/carving/making and using castings
  • 2:45 — Don Williams — Strategy, procedures, and materials for color and finish matching (e.g. new wood repairs on old pieces).
    • Species and grain matches
    • Commonly available materials versus conservation materials
    • Finishes

Note that this meeting is free and open to nonmembers.  However, a hat will be passed for donations to defray the travel expenses of the presenters.

Program Notes.
  • Next month will be our "Dovetail Extravaganza".  To make this a valuable learning experience, presenters are still needed to show how dovetails can be made on the bandsaw and tablesaw.  Contact Jim Francis if you're interested in participating.
  • The topic for May's program is furniture repair/refurbishing/repurposing.  So, bring your project to May's meeting, and we'll investigate/discuss what it needs and what you want to bring it back to life.

See you at the meeting!

At the Upcoming Meeting - SketchUp

This month Jim Francis will give an overview of the 3D design program SketchUp Make.  This program has tremendous capabilities that can take a while to learn.  However, for the new user with limited training it can still be an effective tool for concept and detail designs.

Don't forget to bring your dovetail box starters to compare notes and, if needed, get some mentoring.

Last Meeting Notes - Inspiration & Challenge

Bret Lancaster gave us a good presentation on the challenges of designing his entertainment center. Not enough room in my shop for that one. Wow. Gary Stephens set the challenge for the six-pack caddy and Karl Bogott showed his sample of the dovetail box that is one of the four projects for the year.

Editors Notes - Repeated for Effect

Somewhere out there is a Guild member who is social-media savvy who would like to make our newsletter and website POP! I've had this position long enough. I'm seeking new blood (or sawdust) to take over by the end of the year. See me at any meeting. I'm willing to teach, mentor and advise.

See you Monday - Karl
