From the PresidentWelcome to March Madness!
Speaking of madness, repairing/renewing/refinishing furniture can be a special kind of madness. However, in Jeff Jewitt's book, Refinishing Furniture Made Simple, he offers a process for efficiently bringing a piece of furniture back to life. Here's a very short summary:
Understand that missing finish, black or gray stains (which indicate damage to the wood underneath), large scratches/gouges, sticky finishes, alligatored finishes, or brittle/peeling/cloudy finishes will require that the piece be stripped and then refinished.
SAPFM Meeting. You're invited to attend the spring Society of Period Furniture Makers meeting; Saturday, April 14th; Woodcraft store. This meeting will be packed with great presentations/information. Here's the agenda:
Note that this meeting is free and open to nonmembers. However, a hat will be passed for donations to defray the travel expenses of the presenters. Program Notes.
See you at the meeting! Jim Francis

At the Upcoming Meeting - SketchUpThis month Jim Francis will give an overview of the 3D design program SketchUp Make. This program has tremendous capabilities that can take a while to learn. However, for the new user with limited training it can still be an effective tool for concept and detail designs. Don't forget to bring your dovetail box starters to compare notes and, if needed, get some mentoring. |

Last Meeting Notes - Inspiration & ChallengeBret Lancaster gave us a good presentation on the challenges of designing his entertainment center. Not enough room in my shop for that one. Wow. Gary Stephens set the challenge for the six-pack caddy and Karl Bogott showed his sample of the dovetail box that is one of the four projects for the year. |

Editors Notes - Repeated for EffectSomewhere out there is a Guild member who is social-media savvy who would like to make our newsletter and website POP! I've had this position long enough. I'm seeking new blood (or sawdust) to take over by the end of the year. See me at any meeting. I'm willing to teach, mentor and advise. See you Monday - Karl |
