First, the Holiday Gathering is scheduled for Monday, December 11 at Logan's (across the parking lot from Woodcraft) on Military Highway. Cash Bar and Good Friends begin at 5:30pm with seating for dinner beginning at 6:30. The menu will be familiar, with options for the vegetarians among us, as well. You will receive more information and the per person price, by email with an email address for your RSVP … Please RSVP! Second, This month is the election of officers. We will (must) elect a new treasurer and secretary and confirm Jim for another term. We need a quorum to make it legal, so please plan to attend. |

From the PresidentGreetings! November is here, so that means elections will be held. As mentioned at October's meeting; Daniel Messick is running for Secretary, Greg Guertin - Treasurer, Vice President - vacant, and me (Jim Francis) - President. In addition, there will be a couple year-end items of business to take care of before getting into this month's program. Speaking of which, it should be a fun night of refreshments, gab, and demonstrations/discussions/hands-on opportunities. Bret will discuss cabinet design and construction, Ron will give a brief on his latest furniture project, and I'll demonstrate wide board hand planing. In addition, Scott Fell may bring in one of his specialty planes, and Joe Filipowski may talk about the Wooden Boat Shop. Saturday project. Earlier this year I purchased a Dust Deputy as an addition to my shop vacuum. The system works well, but dragging around the cyclone/bucket and vacuum is a little annoying. However, the attached link to a youtube video shows that the bucket can be bolted or strapped to the vacuum. Certainly worth a try. So much for now; see you at the meeting. Jim Francis

At the Next Meeting - It's Election TimeThis year we must elect a new Secretary and Treasurer. The By-laws require it. Jim Francis has agreed to stand for election to succeed himself as President, and, for the moment, we have no one willing to step forward as Vice President. As noted in Jim's notes, above, Daniel Messick is running for Secretary and Greg Guertin for Treasurer. Their bios are included below: Daniel MessickMoved to Virginia in February with intent of becoming a co-owner of a Chic-Fil-A but after much thought and prayer we decided we can serve the kingdom and helping others in a non-traditional way of traveling to craft fairs and just getting to know people and ideally have more high impactful moments with people; and with the advancement of today's technology communication is connected fairly easily world wide, still also have slow long term relationships. We won't change the world but we will change people throughout the world. Using wood working, to catch the eyes of those searching for something to make them happy and feel good, is what strives me to make unique and eye catching things. But I only want to make things that are practical and obtainable by any person. But the goal is to use the work as an ice breaker and then ultimately Encourage them to invest in eternity. Buying things and having everything this world can provide will only provide you with brief joy. But the love of Christ can give you joy beyond this world. Back in TN I managed a landscape portfolio that spanned all of Middle TN, but I was spending more time with a windshield than I was with people so I gave that up to work at Lowe's. And I worked there until we moved here. Upon being here I have had many up and downs with my shows, mainly rain. But here recently I have been going out of state and it had been so encouraging. New Year's Eve is our six year wedding anniversary and this weekend we are heading to a marriage retreat in Williamsburg. Apologies on the grammar and punctuation I am from Tennessee after all ;) Daniel C Messick Greg GuertinGraduated from Western Branch High School in 1978. While in high school I was a member of various organizations including but not limited to the Key Club and Student Government where I was treasurer for 1 and 2 years respectively. I have been employed at Norfolk Naval Shipyard for 36-1/2 years where I started off as an inside machinist and worked thru the ranks and I am currently in the Engineering and Planning dept. where I work in Submarine Material Planning and Logistics. I have enjoyed all types of woodworking since I was a young child. As a kid whenever my Dad went out to the garage to work on a project I would follow him and attempt to learn without being a pain in the butt. I currently enjoy many types of woodworking with casework, cabinets being on top of my list. My favorite woods are everything except pine unless it is old growth yellow heart. I have been a member of the guild for about 10 years. Greg Guertin Return to Top |

Tip of the Month - The Very Best Glue TopThis tip is a local one, from former guild member Danny Fair, a retired SeaBee Construction Electrician. While the ketchup squirt bottle is a good container with a decent cap, that cap still doesn't seal well; especially when glue begins to accumulate on the tip. No matter what your glue container is, if it has a spout, there's a wire nut that will fit it. The wire nut has some threads that give you an air tight fitting, but will twist off. Give one a try. |

Editors NotesWe're all thankful for something, from good health and wonderful supportive families to sharp tools and straight grain. As we all enter our respective holiday seasons, let's also be grateful for and appreciative of the sacrifices made by the men and women who serve and have served in our Armed Forces. Happy Thanksgiving, all. See you Monday - Karl |
